What is Gender? The Gender Spectrum.

Gender is a societal classification  of people on the basis of physical and behavioral characteristics.

While everyone exists at a different and unique point on the gender spectrum, most people would agree that the spectrum runs from Male to Female.

Beyond the physical, the expression of gender is driven by cultural expectations. 

For example, skirts are expected to be worn by females only in most western cultures (except Scotland)

Culturally, males are expected to be dominant in a relationship.

While many of these cultural expectations are ridiculous, or in some cases offensive, to understand gender one has to look at the extreme ends of the spectrum

At the male gender extreme of the spectrum is the "Ultra Male" (like ultra violet)

The ultra male does not actually exist (or at least I hope not) but symbolizes the extreme qualities associated with ultra maleness.

Please note: These are generalizations at the extreme.*

Ultra Male Physical Generalizations.

Penis.
Larger with a lower body fat ratio.
More facial/body hair
Coarser hair type.
Testosterone driven.

At the female gender extreme of the spectrum is the "Infra Female" (like infra red)

The infra female does not actually exist either, but this theoretical person symbolizes the extreme qualities associated with infra femaleness.

Infra Female Physical Generalizations.

Vagina, Developed Breasts.
Smaller with higher body fat ratio.
Less body hair that is finer.
Estrogen driven.

We are a sexually monomorphic species

It is interesting to note that under most conditions, the physical characteristics of the ultra male and the infra female are not visible.

The fancy name for this is that as a species, we are quite sexually monomorphic. (guys and gals look basically the same to outsiders)

It is our behaviors that govern how our gender is perceived.
